Adventures in Playmobil

Adventures in Playmobil
I've been avoiding the Playmobil bug because the line has such an endless supply of fascinating playsets. I have always feared they would take over our house if we ever let them in. Also, we have about ten gallons of Legos, and I've always thought of their pretend play options as overlapping, with Legos offering the superior experience because they are also a building toy. But the older Z gets, and the clearer her tastes become, the more I am reminded of my own experience with Legos as a child, when I would build whole towns with my younger sister and then abandon her, to her great disappointment, when the building was complete. For her, the building was a necessary step towards being able to finally "play"; for me, it was the point entirely, and the subsequent play-acting was of little interest. Playmobil puts the emphasis squarely on the storytelling and mock social interaction Z seems to thrive on.

Z just bought her first set, selected over more dollies (thank goodness) using a gift certificate she received for Christmas to our local toy shop. As someone who did not grow up playing with Playmobil toys, and who has had little experience with them, allow me to say: Wow. We got this set for under $25, and with a working fountain and a whole lot of pieces, these playsets offer a lot of bang for your buck.

The unicorn was what sold Z on the set (she also bought a pink "solo" unicorn for another $3), but the prince, princess, peacock, frog, swan and cygnet were soon joined by a hippo, astronauts, Hello Kitty, Sweet Streets figures, and others who hadn't yet enjoyed the luxuries of a Dream Garden.

We were surprised to discover that the unicorns, despite their narrow waists, couldn't be mounted by either member of the royal couple. But the Sweet Streets figures could. All except, ironically, the princess.

The delicacy and detail of the plastic is often oddly touching. Look at this tree.

The flowers remind me the most of Legos. The instructions provided intricate steps for building like-flowered bunches, but we went with a random approach.

The water fountain really holds water, and really works, thanks to a small accordion pump you push with your finger, behind the fountain.

A tragic victim of a water horse. Yes, you too can enable your child to incorporate horrifying mythical creatures into their pretend play. Learn how on Punnybop!

Do your kids do Playmobil? Do they have a runaway collection?

Tomorrow we'll post about a lesser-known company with a great line of adventure toys that bears comparison to Playmobil.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Playmobile!!! My guys have loved them for years now! I wanted them for myself as a child, but they were way too pricey! They still are, but if you play your cards right (like I do now), Target, and sometimes Toys R Us, clearances them out somewhat regularly. We have treehouses, pirate ships and the like! They are soo addictive, but very well made, and combine wonderfully with so many other toys for lots of imaginative play. Now that we have a little girl, too, I’m so looking forward to fountains like Z’s and the fantastic doll houses they make!!!

My daughter had a playmobil advent calendar this year, where every box had a piece to complete the “holiday kitchen” set.  Tons of little pots and pans and kuchen and rolling pins and cookbooks.  She did very little playacting with it, but she loves manipulating the little pieces.

Also - I still have the two sets of playmobil toys I used as a child, and they are virtually identical in size and style to modern ones.  So if you find any old sets in a flea market or online, the people will work with modern sets, or at least most of them should.

We have the Easter bunny sets.  I was just wondering what kind of plastic Playmobil is made from and whether or not there are phthalates in them.  The bunny heads are kind of soft and flexible.  Does anybody know?

Yes! We just got our first Playmobil in our house, too, in the form of the gigantic airplane as an extravagant gift from my brother. The best part seems to be giving everyone on the plaen a chance to use the bathroom. What could be better?

My brother and I saved every penny we could as kids to buy Playmobil sets.  They were some of our favorite toys, and my mom still has them (they’re very durable!).  They do proliferate somewhat, but because they’re more expensive than “action figure” type plastic toys they build up more slowly.

We loved the variety.  Astronauts, pirates, Inuit families, safari expeditions, cowboys, Plains indians, knights, road maintenance crews… you name it, they make it, and many sets come with animals and kids.  I already bought a Roman Arena at Target (marked WAY down!) for the day my daughter’s motor skills are up to putting tiny toy tools into tiny toy hands without 5 minutes of intervening frustration-- I can hardly wait.  (Yes, I’ll be playing with it at night.  You’re never to young or too old for bloodthirsty Roman entertainments, right?)

I am a Lego and Playmobil fan, too, and have kids who integrate different toys into their pretend play. Playmobil is maybe best for younger kids who can’t quite follow the Lego building directions… but they can both be used for great imaginative play.  We also had 2 of the Playmobil advent calendars--my daughter loved the advent set that included the unicorn. They are a fun way to anticipate Christmas and if you are careful with the boxes you can use them year after year…

I’m afraid to hop on the Playmobil bandwagon.  Because knowing me, I’ll spend thousands on the sets and thousands of hours playing, which wouldn’t necessarily be good for the level of productivity in our house.  :)

My oldest is JUST now getting into the phase where she’d like them.

The dawning of the new regs potentially prohibiting the resale of children’s products makes me sad, as buying used always makes for a more economical option.

We too love Playmobil!  We have the Nativity set which our boys LOVE as well as some Roman sets and a few knights.  Even our 2 year old loves to play with them and can usually manipulate all the little, teeny tiny pieces.  I love that the boys use their imagination when they play with them and that the fun is limitless! These will definitely be toys I hang onto for the future!

9. Deann [1/06/09]

We LOVE Playmobil!  My kids (now 3.5 and 5.5 yrs) got a few of sets a couple years ago, and they have since become the reliable and always enjoyed add on gift for birthdays and Christmas.  I think the MANY pieces make them a lot of fun.  I love to sit and play Playmobil too.  :) I’m surprised that we haven’t lost any tiny parts actually, we have plenty of flowers, coins, and mail that could disappear.

10. Marketing Mommy [1/06/09]

Count me in among the Playmobil lovers. I adored the sets as a kid and couldn’t wait for my daughter to get old enough to manipulate the hundreds of tiny pieces. Our favorite sets are the ice cream parlor, deli and camper van since setting them up just right is almost as fun as playing with them.

We love Playmobil in our house. Or more to the point, I love Playmobil! We mostly have the 123 sets. My youngest daughter (18mos)loves the people. She used to carry them around with her where ever she went. We’ve drawn landscapes (I’m pretty certain that idea was sparked from zrecs), neighborhoods and incorporated other animals and dolls in the mix. Recently my older daughter (3) was given the Playmobil fairy carriage set for her birthday and more fairies for Christams. She loves to put them together. Unfortunately these are often put up and played with only when little sister is sleeping. But we enjoy them when we can.
The greatest Playmobil set I have seen is the RV set. It comes with a set of teeny tiny silverware. Too funny!
If you have smaller kids, check out the Playmobil 123. It’s designed for younger kids. Fewer pieces and they aren’t removable, but still just as fun!! Would be great for those of you trying to avoid millions of pieces too.
I can see the benefit of having Legos or other block sets and Playmobil. Playmobil would add the “human” element to the structure built with blocks.

**What’s this about there being a ban on reselling children’s products?? As Jen mentioned in comment #7.

My brother and I had these wonderful toys growing up in the 80s...and we still have them for my kids to play with.  We have slowly been adding to the collection.  My only concern is the small parts (we already lost a sword and rabbit from x-mas).  My 5 year old is not the best picker-uper and my 2 year old puts things in his mouth still.  But, that being said… these are for somewhat older than 2 children and they bring back great memories for me!! Try them out and see if your kids like them too.  Start small...we were able to pick up a few figures for less than 2 dollars at a discount decorating/home store!!

13. Kristin [1/06/09]

I admit, I first started getting my boys Playmobil toys solely because I had always wanted them as a kid.  I luckily found our first construction set at a consignment shop.  I try and build onto that set, or at least buy other sets similar to the construction (i.e., we probably won’t ever end up with the new Circus set).  We now have most of the police sets, 2 Cargo items and the tractor trailer.  The worst part of these toys for the parents, are all the little pieces that come along with the sets, like the thousands of pieces of “coal” that come with the cargo ship and front-end loader :P.

My kids dont’ have any playsets yet.. by Playmobil but after seeing your GREAT reviews, love the pictures I’m definately out to get them some! These are soo cute! I love the unicorn!
