Need a new water bottle? We have about 40 ideas for you

Need a new water bottle? We have about 40 ideas for you
Photo by joshme17, shared via Flickr.
We're working on a Showdown-style review of 15 to 20 stainless steel and BPA-free plastic water bottles for Z Recommends, but in the meantime, we've posted chemical profile info and notes (including how BPA-free versions of some transitional products can be identified) for over 30 BPA-free water bottles in the ZRecs Guide today, including a dozen new demo videos and star ratings based on our own product testing for all the items we've actually used.

If you were there even as recently as a day ago, you should take another peek at the Water Bottles section - you may find a new stainless steel, safer plastic, or even glass water bottle to love!

Awesome.

I just heard from a couple of companies and will be reviewing their products, soon.

Also, another one I have reviewed in the past--EarthLust.  Mom-owned and designed, too.  I’ve already reviewed them in the past but plan on highlighting them again this week with a contest.

Let me know if you need contact info for the owner…

Please please please tell me that you have some real contenders in the “insulated” category…

I really like the stainless steel water bottles from Laptop Lunches. They have a wide opening so you can fit ice cubes, topped by a lid (plastic, but I believe BPA-free), with a small opening for sipping. Mine have weathered the dishwasher and heavy use for a couple of years now. Would be interested in your experiences with this bottle.

would be interested to know about all these cheap metal knock off bottles made from china that you can now get at walmart, old navy etc.  when ppl see my kleen kanteen they ask but then say forget it b/c of the price, I have seen some at walmart, old navy, etc for under $10

Brandi, we are unaware of any stainless steel water bottle that is not manufactured in China. This includes Klean Kanteen, whose water bottles have always been made in China, as well as the stainless steel water bottles of every company we’ve looked at. If you know of a company that manufactures stainless steel bottles elsewhere, let us know and we’ll check them out.

I do agree that an established company (Klean Kanteen being one of them) is likely to have better quality control and oversight in place to ensure the quality of their product, and that practically-anonymous bottles as well as those produced by some startups competing with low prices are less likely to have these in place. But that is no guarantee, and we have not seen any specific documentation by any company that explains what types of requirements they place on the factories that produce their stainless steel bottles, or what the outcome of those measures are.

April, we have not used Laptop Lunches’ bottle. We will ask them to send us one!

Christy, we do have several, including Thinksport, a version of the Camelbak bottle with the bite valve that is insulated, and a couple others. I’m sure you’ll see something you’d like to try!

Candace, thanks for the reminder. We have Earthlust on our review list and have products in our queue but your comment prompted me to remember to get it up in the ZRecs Guide! Have you seen that ticker? We’re up over 1200 products listed. Woo hoo!

Brandi, forgot to mention - the one thing you can check with any bottle is that they explicitly state their products are made with 18/8 grade stainless steel. Other steels are available that have more nickel and pose a greater risk for metals leaching into your drink. Also, look for language saying the product is BPA-free, to ensure that they do not use plastic parts which might contain BPA.
