OXO’s cute, functional night lights

OXO’s cute, functional night lights
I recently spent a fair amount of time preparing for the landfall of a hurricane and the possibilty of power outages that came with it. As I was trying to find candles in case the power went out, I remembered that a year or more ago I had I tossed out all my old paraffin candles to replace them with soy ones, which burn cleaner and are non-toxic, but I'd never actually replaced my old candles. So I went to Target at 5:30 p.m. the day before the hurricane was scheduled to hit and was not at all surprised to find the entire store cleaned out of both D batteries and flashlights. I really wish that I'd seen these little gems when I was searching for something for Z to carry around in case the power went out.

The OXO Candela Tooli night lights come in a set of two with a recharging base that serves as a nice home for them. When you set them on the base, they automatically turn off and when you take them off the base (or when the power fails), they automatically turn on. Each light also has its own on/off button on the bottom for more control.

With a single charge, they will stay illuminated for eight hours and they are always cool to the touch, making them safe for little hands and a great nightlight for a child or baby's room. They are LED lights so there are no bulbs to change or break. With two lights, Z has decided that we can share the night lights - each night before bed, she secretly brings one into my room and leaves it on my nightstand for me to find when I go to bed - the other stays in her room. They give off enough light that I can light my way in my bathroom (whose only power plug is inexplicably wired through the light switch, which means that in order to power a night light, I'd have to turn on the room light) or I can use them to make last minute adjustments in Z's room when she's sleeping without waking her. Z, at age four, can easily carry the lights around, set them on the base and turn them on or off manually. They'll also be perfect for emergency preparedness and are so pretty that I won't have to keep them in storage until we need them.

There's a magical quality to these lights, a combination of their automatic on/off functionality and their strange, organic forms. This makes them a special object of interest for a child as well as a functional night light or emergency light.

If the colors of the Tooli aren't to your liking, you can try the Candela Glow which comes with a white lamp but has a variety of colored tops that you can use to coordinate with your home decor.

Well, these are very cool. My 4 yr old would love them. I’ve been looking for something to set on her nightstand that wouldn’t hurt my 10 mo. old if she got her hands on it. Thanks for the post!

Oh, this would be perfect for my 3-year old son! He got attached to a cheap LED trinket my husband brought home from work, but, alas, it has died from being left on all night. I am adding these to his Christmas list! They cost a bit of money though, don’t they?

Yes, $40 is nothing to sneeze at. They definitely invested in the design and are targeting consumers who value good design as well as the functionality. It’d be nice to see them sell a solo light with single base for $25 or so!

I’ve been using the Candela Glow ones since my daughter was born. They’re great for giving off just the right amount of light without being harsh. They’re perfect for when I’m checking in on her at night - when I peek over her crib, if she stirs, I quickly press the button on the bottom which turns off the light! Great feature.

I bought Roo and Jasper a set each and mostly love them. They replaced Roo’s old IKEA nightlights that were similar but had to be plugged in, which was a big drawback since we encourage the kids to stay away from plugs, in general… one thing I preferred about the IKEA nightlights was the rubbery-silicone material. It was a lot more toddler-friendly. Both kids seem to drop the Toolis a lot and I am always afraid they will break.

Have you seen the Tyke Light Buddy from Mobi? We use them for both our kids and love them. Same idea, but made for kids and in a less expensive single version.

We have the Tyke Light for our daughter as well, and love it.

We have these and I love them. I looked at the Tyke Light but didn’t get it because the one I saw had to be plugged in instead of having a charger base. We were transitioning from co-sleeping and I wanted a light that Henry could carry around with him if he needed to find us at night.

Be happy that these are only $40 in the US. In Canada they are $70! Unfortunately, I have fallen for them, and must have some for my daughter’s room. I think we will wait and buy some when we are in Seattle WA this summer…

We received these as a baby gift when our second son was born and have used them every night for 8 months! Our toddler loves their security and so do I. I hadn’t realized they were so fabulous until I nearly tripped over a toy bus one night had it not been for these lights. My infant and I would have gone tumbling down....definitely worth the cost. Just know that if the light isn’t working, check to see that the battery hasn’t been knocked off its spot. =)

Does anyone have any experience with the Ikea kids night light? http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00064445

It looks like it has a battery option (and charger), but I wonder if it stays cool to the touch?

And the price ($14.99) is much nicer!

The OXO nightlights are great, but I think that that are a bit pricey,.. well, at least for me. Just wanted to suggest you to check the LITECUP. This unusual cup is a no spill night-light cup, so you not only get a little beside lamp but also a spill proof night cup in one.
They come in four differnet colours, my son has a blue of of these, and he loves it, they are fantastic! They only come on when it’s dark so you don’t have to worry about turning them on and off. Your little ones can also find their drink in the night and it can be used as a nightlight to guide those little trips to the toilet. The non spill feature saves unwanted night time spilages from sleepy users.

I got mine from a friend living in the UK (she bought it through Amazon), but I found them in US as well, you can buy them from Highwave.

They are only $12.95, so the price speaks for itself.
