The Britax Blink: A nice compact stroller at a great price point

We've been playing with Britax's new compact, lightweight stroller, the Blink, for a few months now, and are ready to share our impressions with you. We're also ready to experiment with more video reviewing, so today's post is a combination of the two. I'll share a few highlights about the Blink in text form, drop in our video demo review, and follow up with a few things you'll see us tweak as we get further into this video reviewing thing.

What Britax does for $150 is impressive. The Blink's basic bone structure is nearly identical to the MacLaren Triumph, but at about $40 less MSRP and with bigger wheels. The canopy is generously sized, it has a pocket I didn't mention in the demo below, and it has a five-point harness. Overall, it's the most lightweight and maneuverable feel you'll get out a stroller built with what also feels like very durable construction. We love how smooth and functional the seat recline is - that plus the five-point harness are two factors that make this stroller truly useful for younger kids - yet this stroller's weight limit tops out at 55 pounds. Z is very tall for her five years, and fits very comfortably in this stroller. (We took it with us to the ABC Kids' Expo in Las Vegas in September. It travels great, too.) The Blink's wheels also have some sort of internal suspension system; we didn't notice this specifically but it does have a smooth ride. Our only real complaint about the stroller is mentioned in the video.

My tripod was an eight-foot ladder, so in choosing between step 4 and 5 I know I didn't necessarily get the best angle on the action. More broadly, we'll try to incorporate still photo details and/or multiple camera angles into these reviews so we can cover things in better technical detail. We'll also do some video reviews of things that don't really need any technical detail, and we'll use multiple camera angles or takes to keep them fresh. We probably won't do much scripting, either, so we'll focus our video reviewing on the products we've had the most experience with and can easily speak about off the cuff. To that end, our videos will probably always be supplemented by some additional information in a blog post, although I'm not sure how best to point people to that post if they're watching the video off-site (on YouTube, embedded in someone else's blog, etc.). Any thoughts on this would be welcome!

Hopefully this model for video reviews can prepare us for even more interesting and personalized video segments soon. And of course, we'll still be doing a lot of text-and-photo reviewing in the format you're used to seeing on ZRecs.

The Britax Blink sells for $150 on Amazon.com and elsewhere. We recommend it for those who want a compact stroller that has a sturdy and open feel, a great child size and age range, and good portability at a very reasonable price point. (You can also outsmart that one design flaw with a pen shoved between one of the pairs of rear wheels.)

The Britax Blink stroller in this review was sent to us by the manufacturer. We will be donating it to charity.

Love that you are doing video reviews!  If you want people to refer back to a specific post, can you list a specific URL (i.e. http://www.zrecommends.com/blink) at the end of the video?  It could even include a note with something like “For more information on XYZ and the notes from our complete review, please visit...”

That may be a possibility - could even do “zrecs.com” but setting up the direct urls would get messy over time (one for each review) as they’d be different from the actual url (http://www.zrecommends.com/detail/blah-blah-blah). I’m not too clear on the SEO cost/benefit of less descriptive URLs, either.

You have put an interesting idea in my mind though. We can set up subdomains for ZRecs, and although having these for individual reviews would be weird, we could make brand subdomains for the brands we write about the most. I think we get up to 100 on GoDaddy. Or we could do these by product categories instead. “For more of our views on this and other strollers, see strollers.zrecs.com.” That might be of greater interest than a brand, since viewers presumably aren’t searching for what to buy from Britax, but what stroller to buy. :)

I love the “strollers.zrecs.com” idea, even if it’s unrelated to the video reviews-- I’m MUCH more likely to search by product category than by brand.

On that note, if you end up doing a lot of comparative stroller reviews, it would be helpful to know how tall the handles are.  Our main reason for buying a “nice” rather than a “semi-disposable” umbrella stroller was the amount of hunching over required for a taller adult to push the cheapo ones.  (We have a Maclaren Volo, incredibly similar to this Britax, but lighter with fewer bells and whistles; we like it a lot, but a taller handle height would probably push us into Britax territory.)

I don’t know how it’s done, but I know that there is the ability to add captions to YouTube videos, that at a minimum people can read (ie: For close up of these wheels, see [URL]). I have definitely seen captions that are clickable, but these may have only been ads or links to iTunes.

Google tells me that what I may be thinking of are called Annotations. But YouTube Captions also exist. I know nothing about uploading online video, so I have no idea which would be better.

Thanks for the note, KGS. We’ll put out a call for some handle measurements at multiple companies we deal with and see if we can work up a list.

Yolanda, we do use captions - there is one in the video above, in fact, where I had to correct a small misstatement. The trick with those is that they are not clickable - what you’re seeing that can be clicked are indeed advertisements. It’s a source of frustration in our use of YouTube that we can’t provide links in the video that can be clicked. So I think a simple subdomain for a product category is probably the best way to go, as long URLs would probably get little activity.

I’ll have to look into that pen trick.  My stroller (Silvercross Dazzle) has that same issue of not being able to be stored upright without being braced against something.

Thanks for the tip.

I was seriously thinking about buying one of these, and now I see they are recalling all of these strollers?  What gives?

8. Jeremiah [2/17/10]

The hinges of virtually all folding strollers can pose a previously unregulated pinch, laceration, and amputation hazard. Britax has recalled their strollers to offer the same type of repair kit that three other brands already have: a piece of fabric that snaps over the hinge area and prevents fingers from getting in the way.

Maclaren’s recall last November of one million strollers was based on 12 fingertips amputations in 15 reported incidents. Graco followed suit with a recall of 1.5 million strollers and evidence of 5 fingertip amputations. Regal Lager recalled its CYBEX strollers and reported one fingertip fracture.

Britax’s recall of the Blink is the first to be announced with no injuries or incidents reported.

In other words, you are probably in the best shape buying a stroller from one of these companies, because they have acknowledged the hazard and developed a remedy that should now be included in any new stroller you buy from them. Other companies have not stepped forward to accept responsibility for this hazard or offer a fix for their products, but they pose the same general hazard.

I have to agree on the handle length issue - we have a semi-disposable umbrella stroller (probably why it hasn’t been recalled or a fix kit available, as the thing cost less than $20) and it rarely is used because at five foot ten, I’m still the much shorter half of the parental type unit in my house.

I’m having a hard time finding a double-stroller that has a tall enough handle and is very compact when folded (our issue is trunk-space.  We don’t have very much, our Baby Trend Expedition jogger-style stroller JUST fits with some grunting and shoving).  I’m assuming side-by-side would be easier (for not twins but less than two years apart) but I dont’ really know....and I have til about August to figure it out!
