The quest for the spill-proof bowl: Could Vital Baby have broken the curse?

We have never, ever seen a suction bowl that works. Oh, there are plenty out there. Munchkin, Boon, that weird one that comes with phone-cord utensils - it's enough to make parents of dish-flipping toddlers contemplate the obvious alternative. Ultimately, the best solutions we've seen have been those that give up on suction altogether in favor of a spill-resistant lip around the bottom edge of a dish - Baby Bjorn and Boon each have one of these.

Vital Baby, a UK company entering the U.S. market sometime soon, hasn't given up. And they have a pretty interesting new strategy to make suction bowls actually work.

The suction cup of this BPA-free, phthalate-free bowl is very strong, but we won't be completely convinced until we have a chance to do our own use testing. Watch for it soon on Z Recommends. We're still waiting for our sample.

The “obvious alternative” cracks me up!  Thanks for keeping a sense of humor in all you do!

I don’t know, it seems very easy to twist the bowl off of the suction cup base.

Jassica, you’re welcome :)

Ah, a skeptic! That’s a good question. Is this a concern because the child would deliberately remove it, or that this would happen accidentally during use?

Unless it is a lot harder to turn than it looks like, my son could figure that out easy!

I think I’ll continue to avoid suction cups and go with parental supervision.

I’m only on day one, but the bowl/suction cup worked great. I live in London and bought the bowl set after reading this post, and I’m VERY happy to report that my 20 month old son tried to grab it and toss it off the high chair because he was done eating, (a common problem for the last month - ugh), and couldn’t!!! It stuck nice and TIGHT. Phew!

Despite what it looks like in the video, it wasn’t easy to twist out (even for me). The groove was pretty well-fitted and it would take some targeted strength/motion to do the 2 handed twist. Hard for small hands at close range, I believe.

And bpa/phthalate free is such a relief. Thanks for posting!
