Two new “BPA-free” problems that could drive away the last loyal SIGG users (whoever you are)

Two new “BPA-free” problems that could drive away the last loyal SIGG users (whoever you are)
I had promised to write about the somewhat shocking marketing tactic SIGG is taking in positioning its new, BPA-free "EcoCare" lined bottles, which they're attempting to favorably contrast not only against their competition but the millions of bottles SIGG previously produced while challenging anyone who claimed their BPA-containing bottles actually contained BPA. But two items must take precedence, because they affect whether or not you should be even thinking about buying another SIGG bottle, or even emailing them (at liners@mysigg.com) to request a free replacement. Both are hot tips from readers that come with ample photographic evidence.

Problem No. 1: SIGG didn't stall long enough

Fully one year after SIGG stopped making bottles with their BPA lining, these bottles are still being shipped to customers by some online retailers. In other words, may have no way of knowing which you will receive until it arrives at your door.

Karen F. ordered a SIGG "Happy Cars" kids' water bottle a week ago through Amazon.com, sold by the third-party seller OnlineComponents.com. This was of course before we published our story and before she'd heard anything about a change in liners in SIGG bottles produced for the last full year. Then she read our story, and that was, you know, surprising. But she even more surprised when she received the package yesterday and discovered that the bottle she'd been sent was one with the older, BPA-containing lining. We found the item for sale through them on Amazon, with nary a whisper (naturally) of which liner was in the bottle.

She wrote:

I just wanted to thank you for your recent story on Sigg water bottles. I ordered one for my son last week. It just came today, and lo and behold, matches the brassy looking BPA filled liner that you display in your story. I would never have know to look for this if I had not seen it here first. I actually thought the product was stainless steel when I ordered it. I didn't realize it was aluminum. Based on your report of the third party testing, it looks like we're still safe with this one, but I wish I had know before I ordered! Thanks again for all the work you do to keep us informed.

What a proposition for consumers willing to swallow their anger and continue to do business with SIGG: Buy your bottle online, wait for it to arrive, and then check a consumer website to see if you actually wanted it in the first place!

We wrote Karen back, asking her for whatever substantiating evidence she could offer. She sent back photographs of everything you need to know. Here's a little slideshow:

Anyone know what those little codes on the sticker mean? We'd love to learn anything else about this bottle based on it. Rogue SIGG employees, we will protect your anonymity!

By the way, this is the single best lesson in how long it can take for a company's "coming clean" to matter to consumers, a fact we mention whenever a company announces they are going BPA-free. It is also the single best reason to do business with a company you trust.

Problem No. 2: The new liner may be very bad

You would think - you really, really would think - that a liner that involved $1 million in factory retooling, two years of secret R&D, and three years of obfuscation and tricky talk would at least be Pretty Damn Good. But we have received reports from two different readers that their SIGG bottles, which they have now identified as being made with the company's new EcoCare liner, have fragments of the liner chipping away from the lid area. ZRecs reader Amelia Sprout writes:

Here are the best pictures I could get. I got it from REI, I think earlier this year. I didn't even notice the different liner until this happened. I came back from a walk and went to take a sip from it and something nicked my lip. I haven't used it since.

Have you had experiences with SIGG's new EcoCare liner, or purchased SIGG bottles in calendar year 2009 that turned out to have the old liner? Tell us in the comments, or email your story to us at editors (at) zrecs (dot) com.

We're working on three posts at the moment that should be of interest: That post I promised about the unwritten rule SIGG is breaking in order to attempt to save its market share, and a two-part, wide-ranging comparative review of safer water bottle alternatives. We have a ton to great adult water bottles to recommend and not-so-great ones to warn you about, so stay tuned, and remember that your purchases through ZRecs links to Amazon help make our consumer research and reviewing possible!

If you'd like to do something about this issue, why not help us do a definitive test to see if EcoCare liners are still flaking? SIGG says' that's impossible. With your help we could test that claim.

Thanks for this-- I’ll stay tuned of course, as we figure out what to do with our Siggs…

2. realgreengirl [8/23/09]

It’s all about the ingredients. Too much time is spent on what something “doesn’t have”. I want to know what it does have. The new SIGG eco-care liner certifications all say what it’s not, just tell us what it is. Oh right, it’s a secret. Time for new rules with regard to being green and being transparent and giving full ingredient disclosure.
Thanks for your excellent reporting.

3. Rommel [8/24/09]

The real problem is using a toxic metal to make a drinking bottle. The whole lining issue is literally covering the larger issue of making the bottle out of aluminum. Would you drink from a lead bottle with an EcoCare liner?  Of course not.

Sigg makes stainless steel bottles now (in China like everyone else) and they should switch to selling those.

4. Jessica [8/24/09]

FYI to Amelia—REI will take back any product, anytime, for any reason, for a full refund.
I didn’t realize they sold Sigg...when I get my coupon from them for replacement bottles (assuming they send it to me after the scathing email I just wrote them), I will try redeeming it at REI and then returning the bottles there. Might be the only way to get my money back out of all this mess...now if only I could get the last 4 years out of my family’s health back. #$!F@!

5. Meredith Lodge [8/24/09]

I bought 5 bottles about a month ago. Two have the old liner.

6. Candace [8/24/09]

Here’s another reason--they expect us to pay postage to return.  These are bottles I bought with my own money based on assurances from SIGG that the liner was “non-toxic” and would not leach BPA.  How is something that contains BPA non-toxic--whether it leaches or not?

7. Amy [8/25/09]

Actually, I contacted the company and while you do have to ship the bottles back, they will credit you with the cost of shipping in addition to the value of the bottles.  You can then use this credit to purchase replacement bottles on their website.

8. Magpie Ima [8/25/09]

I went to the store where I bought mine (New Seasons in Oregon) and they took mine back.  I could either get one of the new “safe” SIGG bottles or a Kleen Kanteen.  The new SIGGs smelled strongly of chemicals so I opted for the oder (and chemical) free Kleen Kanteen.  Ugly is OK if it’s safe!

9. Kathleen [8/25/09]

This is incredible, and not in a good way.  I’ve had a Sigg for over a year and had used it frequently when I was pregnant.  I’m guessing it will be regulated to “flower vase” now.  Thankfully, I use my Earthlust bottle more.

Thanks as always for your investigative reporting.  Looking forward to your water bottle showdown.

10. Candace [8/25/09]

@Amy:

You may spoken with a different rep but I received no such offer.  I received a message today reiterating:

“I am sorry for the inconvenience, but we are unable to provide you with postage for the return at this time.

“This is not a product recall, but a service we are offering to show that we stand behind our products and the people that use them.  Several people are choosing to keep their older SIGGs.  You may choose to keep your current bottles as they have been shown not to leach anything [BPA included] http://mysigg.com/bulletin/testing.html

“However, if you are interested in upgrading your collection, you will have to bear the cost of returning them to us.  The shipping and cost of your replacements will be on us.  As stated in the previous letter, you are also welcome to keep the caps currently on your SIGG bottles.”

I find this completely unacceptable as I have proof of purchase for these three bottles--bought in 2007 on assurance from SIGG that the lining was “non toxic”.

As far as I am concerned, I am done with SIGG’s way of doing business and will spend my dollars elsewhere.

11. Mischa [8/25/09]

Amy- you said that you contacted the company- do you mean Sigg or REI like some people were talking about a few comments up? I would love to be refunded for my bottles (I have three, two old and one EcoCare, but the EcoCare is coming off like in the photos)- however, I don’t want to go through the hassle just yet if the company isn’t accepting them…

12. Trip [8/27/09]

@ Amy

Is this the same Amy posting on TreeHugger praising SIGG for their ‘aggressive’ tactics in satisfying customers?

This sounds like PR damage control to me.

13. Heather [8/28/09]

We recently purchased two of the new SIGG bottles about 6 months ago and the liner in the lid area began to peel and crack on both of our bottles within a few weeks. I am very disappointed to hear about the prior versions containing BPA and also disappointed that the new liners are inadequate as well.

14. Sandy [8/28/09]

@Mischa

I returned my SIGG bottle today to REI for a full refund.  It was a piece of cake.  REI has a 100% customer satisfaction guarantee, so you can return anything for any reason.  I didn’t have my receipt for my SIGG, but because I am an REI member they were able to locate the record of my purchase.  The employee asked me why I was returning the bottle and said, “BPA?” before I had a chance to respond.  The return processed with no problem.

I didn’t consider returning my bottle to SIGG for one second because I knew I could take it back to REI and I do not want another SIGG.

I don’t know what REI will do if you aren’t a member and don’t have your receipt, but I would ask.

15. Connie [8/30/09]

I just purchased two sippy SIGGS for my kids about a month ago, lo and behold, they have the old liner!
I am so upset at SIGG for pointing their fingers at all these plastic bottle companies when their products have the same damaging chemical. They may not have lied outright, but they deceived us and I will not be wasting my money on them again.

16. Andrea [8/31/09]

Thanks for this information. I just purhcased a SIGG water bottle in June 2009 because I understood that they had replaced their old style and they were now BPA free, however, now that you have posted information on how they look, I realize that they are the old style bottles. I am quite outraged because I understood that I was paying more for a bottle because I wanted something safer than plastic, but this is no better, only 5 times more expensive. I bought mine at a health food store that. Would they be obligated to return them? If you could let me know either way that would be great. I am never purchasing another SIGG water bottle in my life.

17. Brittney [8/31/09]

I got the same info as Amy. She probably should have clarified that Sigg will make you pay for shipping the bottles back to them, but they will not charge you for shipping to you the bottles you order on Sigg.com to replace the BPA lined ones.  I mailed my bottles in on Thursday, and I was told in the email I received the day before, that I should be getting an email code to use on the Sigg website to replace my bottles.  We’ll see how long that takes...Also, I am quite peeved to hear that this eco liner is chipping.  For heavens sake, I was thinking this would be better for my 2 and 3-year-old kids.  Guess not since they might swallow whatever is in that liner.  Great!

18. Brittney [8/31/09]

P.S.  All of you who say the lining has chipped, you should really be able to return them for a full refund.  I found this sentence on the “About Us” section of the mysigg.com website (http://mysigg.com/index.asp?PageAction=COMPANY): “And because the liner is virtually baked into the inner walls of the bottle, it will not flake or chip even if dented on the outside.”

19. Paul [8/31/09]

EcoCare liner is chipping in my brand-new SIGG!

I bought a SIGG Heritage about a month ago. It has the new pale yellow (EcoCare) liner. The liner is chipping, coming off in long strips around the threads. I’ve had other SIGGs (with the older golden liner) and this didn’t happen. I’m very disappointed and a little worried, given that I’ve probably been drinking mystery chemicals. Between this experience and the news about the dishonesty of SIGG they have lost me a as a customer.

20. mimi [9/01/09]

We were just given two SIGGS, one a kid’s very darling capped bottle, with the new lining, and there is certainly powdering chippy residue on the threads of both caps and one has a couple of small bubbles that had popped in the lining process, the edges of which are chipping.  Also, of note, they are lined with different thicknesses of coating and it just looks like a cheap, unreliable product!

21. Amber [9/01/09]

I needed new water bottles since i canned the old #7’s last year after the Breast Cancer 3-Day walk and the BPA info I heard...so I had to get new ones this year.  Last week I happened to be in Cody, WY and made a pit stop at Sierra Trading Post specifically to get new water bottles and walking socks.

Got two SIGGs, one for me and one for my preschooler.  I was tweeting my trip and posted my successful find, but a friend responded later that night, “I hope they have the new liner.”

New Liner?  What!  I spent a lot of time trying to track down a dumb water bottle that was NOT made in China and NOT made completely out of plastic only to find the issue in the liner…

So, I called STP when we got home from our trip and they are very kind about returns and sent me a UPS return code.

I decided to go with the Nalgene BPA free plastic bottles, made in the USA.  If only their stainless were also made in the USA.  I’m a bit sick of trying to find stuff not made in China.

I’d like to see more about where stuff is made in future reviews, since I’m just as concerned about that as about health issues.  I don’t see them being separate issues, really. (Powdered milk, anyone?)

By the by, if you are interested in ending Breast Cancer, I’ll be walking in the Seattle Breast Cancer 3-Day next weekend and you can support me with a tax-deductible donation by going to http://www.the3day.org/goto/greeninpink09.

22. Virgil [9/02/09]

Simple solution… Buy NALGENE

Made in the USA, by a company (Nalgene) based in Rochester NY - local economy is suffering a lot due to job losses at Kodak, so anything to boost local companies such as Nalgene is good for you and good for upstate NY.  No affiliation, just glad to see a company from my hometown offering a green solution.

BTW, I used to use SIGG bottles 25 years ago to carry methylated spirits for a Trangia camping stove. This was waaaay before they ever got into the drinking water bottle business.  The bottles are good and strong, but the crud that grows on the inside made me swear to never buy any drinking vessel that is not clear/transparent.  If you can’t even see inside the thing, how are you supposed to know it’s clean?  The Nalgene and Camelbak bottles are wide-mouthed, so you can put them in the dishwasher and get them really clean inside and out.

23. wilson [9/03/09]

i will not be doing business with sigg again.  i guess the swiss is no better then anyone else.. so sad.

24. Wendy [9/04/09]

So, 2 years as a SIGG customer. 11 bottles. multiple retailers. Plus sending as gifts and encouraging others to buy. Not enough free time to figure out returns for all that. And, probably safer to keep using the older bottles based on the independent testing, as the new liner is chipping away. Shame on SIGG. Hope the reaction equals the run up in sales they experienced under false pretenses.

25. Justyn [9/04/09]

Just bought a SIGG bottle (have several old ones in the cupboard) and will be returning it ,even though it has the new lining. SIGG just lost another customer.

26. Joe [9/04/09]

@ Virgil

Nalgene? I thought we were comparing sigg aluminum and some stainless products, such as Kleen Kanteen. Unless of course you are referring to the stainless steel Nalgenes which are manufactured in the amazingly health conscious country of CHINA.

27. Jeremiah [9/04/09]

@Joe,

Klean Kanteen stainless steel water bottles are also made in China.

Find me a stainless steel water bottle that is not made in China and I will eat a shoe.

28. sara [9/16/09]

No wonder Target has SIGGs at a great sale price this week.  I bought 4 yesterday (sucker!!) for gifts.  Guess what?  They are going back tomorrow.

29. Angie [9/17/09]

I bought four water bottles for my family a couple of years ago, so they obviously have the old liners.  I bought another earlier this year.  I am having the same thing happen as in your post.... the liner is peeling away around the cap.  Whatever it’s made out of, I know that I don’t want to be swallowing it!

30. Nicole [9/29/09]

If you live near a Whole Foods I recommend that you try to exchange your old Sigg bottles there.  I went to a Whole Foods in NJ last Friday (9/25) and asked a woman behind the Customer Service desk if they were participating in the Sigg voluntary exchange program and she said yes.  I handed her two old bottles without a receipt and she told me to pick out two bottles (with the new liner) from the Sigg display and bring them to her.  I opened each bottle to verify they had the “new” liner and handed them to the woman at Customer Service.  She put “PAID” stickers on the new bottles and handed them back to me.  That was it.

31. Kathleen [9/29/09]

I sent four bottles back to Sigg for an exchange.  According to my tracking number they were received exactly two weeks ago and I still haven’t received a call for them asking which replacement bottles I would like.  I tried calling every one of the U.S. numbers listed on their website today and every one of them had a recording saying that the voice message box was full.  I’m beginning to feel that I will be lucky if I receive new bottles in the mail.  I may have just sent my old ones, $80 worth, into oblivion.  It is possible they may botch this worse than Havianas did with their recall.

32. Brittney [9/29/09]

Keep an eye on your spam filter. I sent mine in in August, and I just got my code on Friday to replace my bottles. I ordered replacements the same day, but they have not been shipped. We’ll see how long it takes. I decided to not get anything for my kids, and went with the widemouth bottles so I don’t have to worry about the cap stripping the liner, since it screws to the outside. Good luck!

33. Elizabeth [10/07/09]

Thanks for your information! I originally thought we were safe because I thought we bought at least 2 of our Sigg bottles after August 2008. However, after looking at the pictures and comparing them to what we have, it turns out all 3 of our Sigg bottles have the old liner. I searched my Quicken software and discovered I bought them on 12/3/2007, 7/31/2008 and 12/31/2008.

Now that I know about the problems with the new design, I’m planning on returning these to the retailers where I bought them for an exchange. Thanks again for the extra information!

34. Brittney [10/09/09]

I ordered my replacement Siggs online, and I just received them through UPS.  It just takes a while…

35. Liz [10/09/09]

I have had two of the Sigg bottles with the new liners peel along the threads.  I can literally pull it off in corkscrew strips.  I’m done with Sigg.

36. Canne [10/13/09]

I finally received my replacement code today (after waiting almost 2 months) and have a full 18 days to choose replacements.  Looking at the limited stock on hand at their website there is nothing that I like, want or even looks close to the bottles returned.  Sigg is aware stock is limited and should allow more than 18 days to choose replacements.  Now it’s being reported that the new liner is peeling and chipping. How safe it that?  I’ll order replacements, just to make Sigg bear the cost of replacements and shipping, and then recycle them. I will never be seen carrying around another Sigg bottle.  I will buy american made Nalgene from now own.

37. kristy [10/13/09]

I bought my sigg bottle from sports authority. I had the same problem with nicking my lip on the top of the bottle. I returned mine but I cannot get rid of the awful reaction i had from the bottle. My lips are full of tiny blisters and they are all swollen and puffy. Now what? Has anyone had this reaction?

38. kelli [10/14/09]

I walked into Whole Foods and they gave me a store credit for returning the Sigg bottles, no questions asked.

39. Jeffrey [10/15/09]

BIG DETAIL:  This Flickr slideshow shows the packing slip from a company called ONLINECOMPONENTS.COM (selling via Amazon.com).  They are NOT an official Sigg retailer.  As far as I know, MySigg.com is the only official Sigg online web retailer, their official store, if you will.  So if some companies are still selling the old bottles that they have in their inventory, we can’t hold Sigg responsible for what a third party vendor does.  We don’t know how long OnlineComponents has had these bottles in stock.

40. Jeremiah [10/15/09]

Jeffrey, REI also sells SIGG bottles online. Do you think they don’t have permission to do this?

I think your definition of “official” is a little strange. SIGG made a name for itself extending credit to the smallest online shops around, which is why they were ubiquitous for a while. Then they stopped servicing most of those online wholesale customers, with the explanation that they could not keep up with demand. But they continued to sell those BPA-containing bottles to retailers without interruption until their August 2009 announcement, knowing full well they’d be in the supply chain for months. These bottles are still on shelves at Whole Foods and other brick-and-mortar retailers, even as they accept returns.

If your defense of SIGG is truly that they can only vouch for products they sell directly, I’d be curious to know what other companies you’d be willing to hold to such a lucrative standard.

41. Jeffrey [10/15/09]

Good and valid points, Jeremiah.  I don’t absolve Sigg from full responsibility in their choice to delay their admission about the old liners.  That was not cool.  So perhaps the debate is more they should have offered a mandatory vs. voluntary recall?

In the end, the market will work itself out.  If people truly have a bad taste in their mouth for Sigg, they will simply choose to buy other bottles.

Sigg messed up, the CEO apologized, they are making up for it by offering free exchange. For me, I’m satisfied.  Personally, I still prefer the aluminum Siggs to the stainless steel bottles.

42. roger [10/21/09]

FYI SIGG’s customer service has been incredibly weak regarding the returns. i sent two bottles ($9 in priority mail shipping) over 6 weeks ago (!) for exchange and still haven’t heard a peep from them or a voucher even though i was careful to fill out their return sheet in a legible manner, etc.

4 emails and 2 phone calls (recording machine in the middle of the day) later, still not one response from them. I understand about loss, mail issues, and things getting lost in the shuffle--i’ve worked on a return floor before--but the fact that they haven’t responded to any correspondance in about a month’s time is the real disappointment. I’ve had to buy replacement bottles (definitely not SIGGs) for a few recent trips. Hopefully i’m the anomaly but i’d beware of anyone looking for a quick exchange, if you even get one. I’m out time, money and patience with the SIGG on this one. They’ve lost my patronage for sure…

43. Maria [10/23/09]

I had been a loyal Sigg user and defended them for years to friends and family members who insisted the lining couldn’t be safe. Then the news hit, and I threw away three bottles that my husband, daughter and I had used for years. I purchased the NEW bottles for us, and now both my and my daughter’s linings are peeling at the top. Now what? I have given this company quite enough of my hard-earned money.

44. Karyn [10/27/09]

I too have been waiting for over a month for a response from SIGG regarding my water bottle I sent beck. I know they received it, I have the tracking number that says they received it over a month ago. I have sent numerous emails and tried calling them. They never respond. Their voice mail if filled up so I can’t even leave a message. To paraphrase the CEO on letters he has sent - we pride ourselves on our 100 year old reputation of quality and good service. HA!! hat a joke - it has been revealed that their quality is lacking and now it shows that their service also leaves much to be desired. I will NEVER buy SIGG again. They have truly missed the mark here.

45. Karla [10/31/09]

Those of you waiting for replacement Sigg bottles - I finally got mine after six weeks of waiting (and having to purchase alternative bottles to use) - I sent in a dozen as I have bought them for family and friends so collected them to send back.  Sigg lets on that you will be emailed and allowed to pick your bottles, but forget it - after trying to contact them several times to see what was taking so long, (and having no luck) I received the bottles in the mail the other day.  I had no selection opportunities for the replacements at all - and they sent whatever they felt like - even 2 bottles with that rough finish that I so dislike, and with completely different (and awful) caps.  Several of the bottles are, to me, hideous.  None of the bottles I so carefully purchased were replaced with the same thing - you’d think the company who makes them could give you the same ones at least, if they don’t let you pick them. It’s such great customer service - first lie to your customers for several years, then make them pay for the postage to return them, and then send tacky replacements after promising that they would be contacted to pick their new ones themselves, and make them wait for over a month for these tacky replacements.

Oh well, I’ve already had 2 of the new ones that peeled away around the opening (which I also had replaced) and I know the new bottles will only last about six months.  Then I can say goodbye to Sigg forever!

46. Isaac [11/12/09]

Just got back from japan and found out about this recall.
How do I find out if mine is the older bottle.  The page on Sigg is gone and I cannot find a list of serial #’s to check against.
Assist please
I

47. CM [11/13/09]

A few things:
-It’s Nov. 13 and I FINALLY heard from Sigg today about 8 bottles sent by priority mail that were delivered to them on Sept. 11 (over 2 months ago).
-They sent me a code to use on their site to choose which bottles I want, which is not the experience of the previous poster above.
-There isn’t much selection left on their site, which is very annoying.  I got most of my bottles in Europe and there is nothing similar to choose from, except for 1 of the 8 bottles I sent in.
-I’m worried about the new liner.  Sounds worse than the old one, given what people have said here.
-I have all the neoprene covers for my 8 bottles, which seem very hard to get these days.  But I don’t have any bottles to put in them now.
-I wasn’t given a deadline about when I’ve got to order my replacements, like one of the posters above got.  I’m not sure if they just didn’t think to tell me, or if I don’t really have one.  Weird.
-I might just order some steel un-lined thermoses made in China that they’ve got on their site.  At least I wouldn’t have to worry about a liner cracking.  (Of course, they don’t reveal on their shop’s site the origin or composition of the thermoses - for that info I had to look at Am*zon reviews).

48. bx6 [11/17/09]

I purchased my current Sigg (1.0 ltr) near the beginning of October from a local store and the lining is already flaking around the threads at the mouth of the bottle. This is the new liner (light beige, not copper colored). This bottle is actually a replacement for another Sigg I had that started to flake after only a few weeks as well. Ridiculous and deceitful behavior by Sigg imo.

49. Adele [11/17/09]

DO NOT OPT FOR THE NEW ECO-CARE LINERS!!!!

I have long used a Sigg, and opted in August to send mine in for a free exchange with one with a new Eco-care liner.
Only 2 months into the use of my new Sigg, I am drinking away, and an entire long strand of the nasty lining breaks off and enters my mouth. I am astounded at the poor quality of this. Was there even testing for what occurs during regular use during the production and design of this thing?
There is NO way I will continue to use this for drinking water. To be honest, I would feel more comfortable with my old Sigg, while it may be lined with chemicals, at least it didn’t spit them back in my face.
I suppose my best option is to graduate back to a kleen kanteen (although I have found that they turn dark brown on the inside after a while).
I decided to give Sigg a second chance, and am SO let down.

50. Sarah [11/30/09]

I exchanged four SIGG bottles just under a month ago and two of the liners are peeling away already!

51. Jason [12/02/09]

Add another furious customer that bought into Siggs BS. I have the new wide mouth eco care liner and Sigg will never respond to repeated contact attempts. I will try to return mine to Dicks and hope that they take it. I am through with sigg, they can go to hell for their customer service, and lies.

52. Margaret Auld-Louie [12/08/09]

Same thing as Sarah. I exchanged 4 bottles a month ago and 2 of the liners are peeling away already at the mouth. The only reason the other 2 aren’t peeling yet is I haven’t used the bottles yet!

53. ac [12/19/09]

I am really disappointed in SIGG. They offer a voluntary recall on a product they didn’t produce well, and now they aren’t scoring any points for customer service. If anything, in finding this site I realize I am not alone.

I returned 2 bottles via Priority Mail in mid-September, with very legible information on the return sheet etc., and as of today I have YET to hear from them. I have emailed them twice; the first time in October—they said it’s taking an average of 4 to 6 weeks to process claims (which put them in that timeframe BTW). After not hearing from them yet by November, I emailed them again and immediately got an auto-reply saying it would take over a week to get a response to my inquiry—and that hasn’t happened yet! We are now into three months?! Come on.

I’m so tired of waiting. I want them to own up to their part of their offer - the exchange for new bottles—yet part of me can care less now that I’ve read the disappointing feedback on their new liners. I guess I need to look for a better and more reliable company and product give my family.

I also just discovered peeling on the inside rim of my newer-lined SIGG (that I got by exchanging my old-lined SIGG at a local sports supply store 3 months ago).  What a disappointment.  I’ll never buy SIGG again.

55. Max [1/29/10]

I bought two bottles 3 months ago and the lining is completely coming off. I have never been more pissed.

Due to the lining coming off into our mouths we should demand to know what chemical agents have been used in the lining and if there are ingested!

56. Matt [2/01/10]

I just bought a Sigg bottle 12/26/09. Now just a month later the liner is peeling at the screw threads.
I didn’t do any research into these before buying them at the store, but I guess I should have. I didn’t even realize it had a liner to begin with.

I am looking around for a replacement now. The ones at greenbottleonline dot com look good. Does anyone know if this is a good company to get them from or would you recommend something else?
I think the full stainless steel inside bottles would be the best.

57. Crappy SIGG [2/25/10]

I’ve been writing about SIGG for some time.  I started because the paint on the outside peeled, bubbled and cracked.  Now we have all this BPA stuff.  Crazy.

58. Jmil [3/09/10]

my wife and I had 3 SIGG bottles we returned to them for the BPA stuff.  2 of the 3 that we now have with the eco-liner whatever are peeling away at the mouthpiece.  lame

59. Hillary [3/10/10]

I had to trade in two of my siggs because they had the old labels. Whole Foods replaced them with the new bottles with the bpa free liners. With in a few days the liners were peeling off the threading in both of them. I have been trying to get new bottles from Sigg, but they have not been very helpful. I wish I would have invested in Klean Kanteen.

60. Sara [3/17/10]

Yup, replaced my old-liner Siggs with new-liner Siggs and the lining started bubbling/chipping and has peeled off around the threads.  So disappointing!  I think I’m going to go with Camelbak BPA-free bottles for now, until they find the bad thing in THOSE!

61. deborah [3/19/10]

I had 3 Sigg bottles with the old liners and shipped mine back shortly after the announced their exchange program. I was pretty impressed about the time line it took to receive the “new” bottles. I have had them for 3ish months now and I, like many others it seems, have found the inner liner to be peeling away around the opening. Does anyone know of a program to replace the replaced ones? or should I just move on to another brand? Any suggestions? Is Kleen KAnteen better?

62. Mark Enloe [3/31/10]

My new Sigg bottle is peeling around the threads!  I thought at first there was a hair or something in the bottle… pulled at it a little… the whole lining of the threads pulled away in almost one piece… I’m an REI member but unfortunately purchased this bottle at a “local” outfitter.  I’ll see if they’ll take it back....

63. Angela [4/13/10]

Had the old BPA contained bottles. Did the whole exchange program thing and got the eco-friendly ones late last year. Just like everyone else, the new bottles are cracking at the month and peeling away. Both my girls were using them. I feel sick to my stomach to think that I paid more to buy better water bottles for them to use and only to have them ingesting the “eco friendly” liner. Hell yes, I am done with SIGG for good!

64. Andrea [4/20/10]

My bottle and my husbands bottle are peeling.

65. Brian [4/21/10]

Yes - mine are peeling too.  It took time, energy and money to get my replacement bottles with the new liner—but now 3 out of 4 bottles have started peeling at the threads.  I can’t believe they could have re-tooled their factory to make this....such astonishingly poor quality!!

66. timoteodelzer [4/26/10]

Here is a message I got from Sigg when I asked if I could replace my kids’ older Sigg bottles with BPA in the liner:

Please look at the attachment to see which liner you have.

SIGG bottle manufactured prior to August 2008 contained an epoxy resin liner that contains a trace amount of BPA.  The bottles, tested in the US and in Europe, have been proven to not leech BPA.  There was never a SIGG bottle recall.

A Voluntary Exchange Program ran from August 2009-December 2009 that allowed customers to exchange their older bottles for new bottles with the Eco-Care liner.  The program has expired and SIGG is no longer offering exchanges.

If you would like new SIGG bottles that have the Eco-Care liner, made from BPA free ingredients, please log onto mysigg.com

.  All the bottles (except for the SALE category) are 2010 product line that has been redesigned to eliminate the peeling.

Thanks

I just purhased my bottles about two months ago for my family.  Like many, I use these bottles for my children.  I was horrified to find the lining of the bottles peeling at the tread.  I use these bottles solely for water and handwash them after use.  I am angered over the possibility that we could have very well ingested this supposed eco-lining.  I purchased my bottles at Whole Foods.  I’m hoping they’ll take the bottles back without a receipt.

68. Holly [5/10/10]

Just wanted to let you know that I, too, bought a bottle and within a month of receiving it, the liner was peeling off. I emailed sigg asking for a replacement bottle. I literally emailed them back and forth for two months. Their customer service was beyond awful, and I was actually corresponding with the customer service manager. I still haven’t received a bottle yet. I will never buy a Sigg water bottle again because of this awful experience, and I recommend highly against it.

69. Optimist [5/24/10]

2 of 3 replacement bottles are peeling @ the threads.

70. Amie [5/28/10]

I have one of the new eco-liner bottles and it too is peeling away at the threads. I have three old Sigg bottles and much prefer them. At least I don’t get liner in my mouth when I drink.

71. Laurel [6/16/10]

I exchanged 3 SIGGS for new eco-liner SIGGS at Whole Foods last October. One of the new ones began peeling along the threads within 3 weeks. The other 2 are peeling as well. I was a devoted SIGG fan and I still love their designs, but I sure don’t recommend them anymore. I’m very disappointed in the company.

72. Maia Hughes [7/25/10]

I bought a new bpa free Sigg, having had excellent experiences with my old one. Two weeks in (i use it to drink water at work with, we’re not meant to be seen drinking but we’re allowed to drink water when rhere are no customers - so hardly heavy use) i was rinsing it gently and had my finger down inside the neck when the lining on the screw came off round my finger like a ring. Took it to the shop, they gave me a replacement, third time i unscrewed the cap, threadlike strands of lining were visible in the screw threads. Took to shop, shop very cross but finally refunded me (they’re very small). Not buying another.

i also had a exchanged my older bottles for the newly lined ones last fall, and one of them also started peeling last month. i contacted sigg canada, and was asked to return my peeling bottle (via courier, sigg’s account) and received a brand new bottle within two days. i think they are still a stand up company. on a side note, i was informed the liner is food based, however, i encourage you to contact sigg, as they’ll likely replace your bottles also.

The Kleen Kanteens taste like nasty, dirty metal. Exactly like sucking on filthy coins. While on a heavy metal chelation, I learned that we also absorb large amounts of stainless steel and this is also toxic to our bodies (a heavy metal). I can’t swallow water that tastes like metal soup- yuck. I also don’t feel good about any plastics, or liners, that heat up- such as in a scorching car. The frosted white ‘plastic’ Nalgene bottles (blue lid) that I used for camping (circa 1970) are still being sold and are allegedly the most benign. Man can live in outer space but cannot invent a healthy bottle? Glass is good (high quality- not strengthened with aluminum or other toxics). But then we must show respect for the water/glass and not to break it. Phew! Does anyone know if Sigg is PVC-free? My new Sigg has not peeled, yet.

75. eva knodt [8/16/10]

Thanks for this article. I never trusted these bottles since they came online with fancy eco-names. Always wondered what this plastic liner was doing in there (didn’t I want to get away from plastic?)

Here is what I have been using for years: an epic water filter (gravity driven) with a Doulton filter insert, and a green glass mineral water bottle. Efficient, cheap, and super clean. And lugging a glass bottle around? After you’ve done it for a while you stop noticing it.

I wrote to Sigg about my 3 liners flaking and they asked me to e-mail pictures and then sent me a prepaid postage sheet.  They said to pick out replacements send the order with the old bottles and they will replace them free.  They were very good about replacing them and the new ones should be here next week. (hopefully the new ones will not have any problems!)

77. amit [9/17/10]

I think this post make easy to know more about Sigg.As above said by someone “I actually thought the product was stainless steel when I ordered it. I didn’t realize it was aluminum”.

From these lines you can get idea how this post can help to all.I ll also share this post with my all friends and recommend them also to share with further. So that this post can reach at maximum peoples.Anyway,Thanks for the awesome information.

We have a total of 6 SIGG bottles of different sizes that we bought over the years. 4 of them are the old BPA ones and 2 of them are the new ones. I did not know about the BPA problem until a few months ago so I sent them in for replacement. We started using the 2 new bottles while the old ones are being replaced. The one that my son is using started to peel and today my son came home with a long thread of liner that came off the mouth of the bottle. I am going to write to SIGG about this. Do we know if this problem is only related to the ones that they manufactured in the beginning of the new liner bottles? Would the ones that I got recently through replacement have the same problem? Should I stop using them all together? Would they give me money back or they would just send me replacements?
